Hiroshi Yoshida (吉田博)

Born in Kurume, Fukuoka on September 19th, 1876, Hiroshi Yoshida studied Western-style painting and grew to become one of the most influential artists in the Shin-Hanga ("new woodblock printing") style that incorporated many international art styles into woodblock printing.

In 1899, Yoshida entered the American art world with his exhibition at the Detroit Museum of Art, and spent much of the proceeding years exploring the world. It wasn't until 1920, when Yoshida was 44 years old, that he started publishing woodblock prints.

He continued to explore the potential for incorporating international art styles into Japanese woodblock printing, and famously brought out a wide range of color combinations for the same designs in series like Sailing Boats.
